As I drove along the small winding roads that took me to this quaint little town, there was an excitement stirring inside of me. The soothing green visibility of Rai houses adjacent around created a calming environment. It wasn’t just another tourist trap — Lungchu provided an authentic interaction with a culture that flourished in a vortex of diligence.
A beautiful thing about offbeat travel experiences is that they give me a chance to immerse myself in local culture in the most intimate way. In Lungchu, things unfold at another speed. Skyline Homestay: My Homestay Experience
During my visit to Lungchu, I opted to stay at the Skyline Retreat and I cannot recommend it more! The accommodations were spacious, comfortable little rooms with charming tiny balconies (mine was 8 feet) for tea-sipping and mountain-gazing. My have was cozy, enabling me to have restful nights after my daily explorations.
The dining experience at the homestay is a highlight in itself. These included typical Indian cuisine of fresh local food that was delicious. Breakfast typically began with bed tea and proceeded to a range of local dishes. With meals served in the dining room, they became an opportunity to meet fellow travelers, exchange stories and savor the delicious flavors Lungchu offered.
What really made us feel special was the owners of Skyline Retreat. And when I arrived, they made me feel like one of their own. I found hiring a car to be the most convenient option, but for those arriving at Bagdogra Airport, renting a car upon arrival is quite feasible as well.
The best time to experience Lungchu’s beauty is undoubtedly during the autumn to summer months when the air is clear and the skies offer unobstructed views of the majestic Kanchenjunga. While I appreciated the lush greenery of the monsoon, autumn truly was a spectacle, as the landscape turned vibrant with colors.
